40 is the new 30!

My wonderful friend Pam turned 40 over the weekend (and I think we’ve been friends for 20 years now – sshhhh don’t tell anyone) and she wanted a memorable occasion with her closest of girlfriends – Pam did such an amazing job with the decorating and the amazing three course menu.  And a big thank you to her hubby Troy, for being our waiter for the afternoon…Thanks Pam, it was an honour to be a part of your special day..xx

Pam gave us little thank you gifts and I love this verse she used:-

Good friends are like stars…

You don’t always see them,

But you know they’re always there.

Happy Birthday Pam!!!

A Girl and Her Harley Davidson

I just had to post a few of these shots – my gorgeous sister and her Harley called Henry….

I know some of you will be thinking “but you just shoot weddings and children” – well guess what, yes I love my weddings and children shoots, but every now and then a photographer needs to find their creative side and do something for themselves.   Some photographers get burnt out or frustrated with their photography business, and they forget the reason why they started their photography business – because they LOVED photography, and they want to express their creative side.  Do some photography that you love, do something for yourself, become inspired and creative enough to get out of that rut, and LOVE the beautiful images you are producing…..every photographer should find or make the time to shoot something for them and them alone….and it is so much fun!!

So from now on I’m going to try do some more creative shoots / concept shoots / street shoots and maybe even collaborate with other photographers, a florist, a Stylist – who knows – maybe you want to try something different – well just ask – photographers love people will amazing ideas and want to help you create something amazing for you to remember, an awesome experience and memories to treasure – but whatever it is, just get out there and do something – you will feel great about it!!

Now my sister and I had been wanting to do a shoot with her bike for a little while, so we chatted about it and finally worked out a suitable time for both of us (and would you believe it, it rained!)… She had ridden up from the Gold Coast, and was rained on, but it wasn’t going to stop us doing this shoot!  I had a great location in mind and thankfully the rain stopped just long enough to get these fantastic shots!  Actually it was also raining in some of these shots – but you would never know it!

Rochelle & Gabe’s Highlights – Brisbane Wedding 27th April 2013

Last Saturday, Ben and I had the wonderful pleasure of photographing Rochelle and Gabriel’s gorgeous wedding.

Rochelle and Gabe met through work.   They had been to Sydney and when they landed in Brisbane there was a limo waiting to whisk them away to Secrets on the Lake in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, this is where Gabe proposed – surrounded by rainforest and overlooking the lake where they had their first kiss. Much better than Sydney!

The Details

Ceremony location: Our Lady of the Way Church in Petrie | Reception location: Restaurant Two | Gown:  Sugar and Spice in Chermside

Wedding bands and engagement rings: Xennox Diamond World made Rochelle’s engagement and wedding rings. Gabe’s wedding band was from Blue Nile.

Decorator: Styled Events | Florist Karen, from Bliss Floral | Linen napkins were sourced from Thea and Sami, a local Brisbane screen printer | Hair: Bec from Dextress in Murrumba Downs cut and styled Rochelle’s hair a few days prior to the wedding.

Sarah from the Powder Room looked after their hair on the day and did a great job to fit in Rochelle’s last minute hair piece.

Bridal party attire: The bridesmaids wore navy dresses from Review and the groomsmen wore suits from Tony Barlow. Gabe wore his own suit (and complained a little that he was the only one without a new outfit).

Make-up: Prue from the Powder Room made the girls look beautiful with her make-up on the day. The Powder Room girls were a great calming influence in the morning.

Flowers: Karen from Bliss Floral Design did an amazing job with all the flowers.

Rochelle and her sisters carried bouquets of roses and orchids. Rochelle’s bouquet included cymbidium orchids, Singapore orchids, Emmanuel roses and beautiful two toned sugar plum roses. Her sisters’ bouquets included Singapore orchids, sugar plum roses, glamour girl roses and Rosalind David Austin roses. Gabe had a single Emmanuel rose button hole and the groomsmen wore sugar plum rose button holes.

Stationery: invitations and order of service covers were printed by Peppermint Press | The remaining stationery was put together with paper from Paper Connection on Charlotte Street.

Here’s some highlight’s from Rochelle and Gabe’s day.

Rochelle and Gabe, thanks for letting us be a part of your very special day.

May 6, 2013 - 3:07 pm Fiona - Ohhh she is totally channeling Audrey Hepburn in the portrait sitting on the couch looking down (before the ceremony). What a stunning bride!

May 6, 2013 - 3:13 pm Lisa - Yes she totally IS channeling Audrey Hepburn (that's exactly what I thought!). I love brides with short hair - there's just "something" about them. Thanks for your lovely comment Fiona.

Sarah’s Beautiful Babyshower 20.04.2013

It’s always such a deep honour to be invited to my bride’s babyshowers and especially as a guest and a friend.  Sarah and I have kept in touch via facebook and instagram (as Sarah and Will live in Emerald, Qld) since they were married just over 12 months ago, we’ve chatted about our trips to New York and now to share in her amazing journey of motherhood…it’s just such a special feeling.

Now Sarah told me not to bring my camera, just come along and enjoy the afternoon, but I just had to take a few shots for her (my camera is attached to my hip)..

And I just loved Sarah’s colour theme – yellow, grey and white – just so bright and happy, just like this occasion!

Thank you again Sarah, I had a wonderful afternoon, ate way too much food, and it was nice to see your family and friends again…All the very best for a happy healthy baby – due soon!!!

My Last Day In New York – it’s been an amazing journey!!

Wow, I’m finally up to my last day in New York……it’s been an incredible holiday that’s for sure!!  Nearly 2 weeks away from home and my family, and averaging 5 hours sleep every night, it’s amazing when you get to this last day and you.just.want.to.get.home!

Well in our usual travel fashion, we still had things we wanted to see and do in New York before we left, so a quick breakfast and we were off again – first stop The Empire State Building!  The line up was pretty fast moving and security in this building is second to none – it’s like going through an airport!  But once you’re up on the 102nd floor – the views are just incredible on a clear day!

Some Facts

  • The Empire State Building is 1,453 feet, 8 9/16 inches from the base to the top of the lightning rod.
  • There are 1,860 steps from street level to the 102nd floor.
  • 10-20,000 people visit daily.
  • On a clear day, you can see for almost 80 miles from the top of the Empire State Building.
  • Lightening strikes the Empire State Building about 100 times a year.
  • The lights on the Empire State Building change colour for holidays and special observances (it was green for St Patrick’s Day).

So windy up there!!

And Grand Central Terminal, celebrating 100 years – our last stop!!!

We raced back to our hotel, had some lunch, did some more quick shopping in Times Square and then we were heading to the JFK Airport – stuck in traffic, and thought we were going to miss our flight!!!  We had already been awake 10 hours by now, had a 6 hours flight to Los Angeles, 3 hours in LAX before our next flight to leave, and then 12 hours flight home to Brisbane………and I didn’t sleep on the plane!  By the time I got home to my wonderful family waiting for me at the airport I had been awake for 32 hours and then I lasted until nearly 8pm that Friday night before I went to bed – so a total of 42 hours awake!!  But it was so nice to be home with Ben and the kids.  It’s ALWAYS nice to come home even after an awesome holiday!!

And I can’t wait to start working on my Holiday Album!!!

Today started off as a hard day in New York

Stuff ups with buses, buses being full, pouring rain and freezing cold, we were all feeling a bit flat (and probably quite tired and I was missing my family) today :O(  We felt we were wasting time waiting for buses that weren’t stopping, (when we were trying to go Uptown today), so we caught a cab to the American Museum of Natural History…

Now this Museum is massive!!  We only got to spend about one and a half hours here, but what we saw was amazing!!!  We then managed to find a bus that we could get on to (because these buses are half open and half covered, the seats were wet and everyone was trying to get under cover)…but the guides on these buses are wonderful, we met some really funny characters, a Brooklyn guy who was happy to share his birthday with our ANZACs, another lady who told us how she didn’t go to the tax department and managed to escape 9/11 – and these guys don’t complain about the weather, they are so proud of their City of New York and LOVE their jobs!  We started to perk up a bit after this!!

Display at the Museum

I think these 2 photos show just how cold and wet it was!  The image on the left is the ice on the bus roof, and the person walking in Central Park under the umbrella shows the snow and ice.

 Freezing on the bus :O)

 Going through Harlem

The Harlem Shake (now that’s a crazy dance!)  Check it out on youtube.

 Central Park – North Entrance

Next stop – the Solomon Guggenheim Museum!!!  I was excited about going here – mostly for the architecture of this amazing place!!!  I have wanted to photograph it for over 2 years!

Inside the Guggenheim

Central Park, across from The Plaza Hotel

Hayley and I then went to the Apple Store On Fifth Avenue, this place has to be seen to believe!

A quick run around FAO Schwarz Toy Store, so Hayley could play on the Big Piano (yes from the movie “Big”) and then we had a Warm Cocktail in the Champagne Bar of The Plaza Hotel!!  (I wasn’t going to put this photo in, but hey why not!!)

C E N T R A L P A R K
Kahlua, Baileys, Grand Marnier, Hot Chocolate and
Whipped Cream
TO DIE FOR!

We met Deb afterwards at the Rockefellar Centre where we watched the sunset on The Top of the Rock!

What an amazing way to finish the day.  Who would have thought it would have been sunny (and a sunset) after all the rain and ice and snow we had, especially that morning!

Dinner was at our Irish Bar and then we just had to go visit “UPSTAIRS at the Kimberly Hotel” – a stunning penthouse level lounge sitting 30 stories high atop the Kimberly Hotel in Midtown Manhattan with breathtaking views of the iconic Chrysler Building to end our last night in New York!!   One more day to blog about heading home…

More New York – Flatiron District, Statue of Liberty and Snow in Times Square

Monday in New York….After a huge weekend with snow, St Patrick’s Day and my engagement shoot, the girls and I picked up our 3 Day New York Passes (highly recommended) and jumped on one of those hop on, hop off buses to see more of New York!  Another chilly day, but we loved it!

We hopped off at the Flatiron District and another coffee / hot chocolate at Eataly (amazing place), went through Greenwich, Soho (where I bought my new boots- yay), and then after lunch and a quick walk around the 9/11 Memorial, we headed to Battery Park to see The Statue of Liberty.

Just after we boarded Miss Ellis Island it started sleeting (I guess that’s what it was – ICE)!!  Thank goodness it was warm inside this boat, because it was freezing outside!!!

The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are still closed after Superstorm Sandy from last October.

(not a bad iPhone photo above!)

We hopped back on our bus and by now we were pretty wet and just wanted to go somewhere warm….so we headed back through Chinatown, Little Italy and finally back into Times Square..where we went to John’s Pizzeria in Times Square – nothing better than a nice hot New York pizza!!!

And to our surprise it was snowing more than we had seen over the last couple of days when we came out of that restaurant, so we had to grab our cameras, try not to slip over in the black ice and treated Times Square like a playground – I’m sure people thought we were crazy!!!

This Deli is where we had breakfast most mornings (across from our hotel) and we frequested O’Donohugh’s a couple of times too..

And this image below is from a sequence – it’s the funniest moments ever in New York (but I think it’s a “you had to be there” moment) :O)

My dream came true, an Engagement Shoot in New York!!!

Yes it’s amazing how things turn out.  Ben met our wedding clients Caity and John around the end of last year and their wedding will be in Brisbane at the end of August 2013.

Ben told Caity and John that I’d be in New York in March so we organised to catch up (for a lovely dinner on the Saturday night to discuss their wedding plans) and then for their engagement shoot in Central Park!  The temperature was freezing (and such a nice change from Queensland weather) when I met Caity and John on the Sunday afternoon.

I met them at their apartment (which had amazing views of New York)…and these guys are just so welcoming and so darn cute together!!!  Here’s some of their images and Ben and I cannot wait for their wedding later this year!!!  Caity is a Queenslander,  John is a Californian and they met in Los Angeles whilst Caity was working over there.  They’ve lived in San Francisco, and just recently moved to New York!

I think Caity and John could pass for Royalty!  Look at them!!!  New York’s William and Kate!!

I love how John just can’t take his eyes off Caity – total love and devotion..

Then we jumped into a taxi and had a quick cab ride to Central Park.  It wasn’t snowing today but it was still only about 2 degrees and Caity braved it in a dress and heels!  We headed to Bow Bridge, voted No. 1 of the Top 10 Most Romantic spots in Central Park.

We then walked around the stunning Bethesda Fountain..

I think this image below is one of my favourites!!!

Afterwards Caity, John and I caught a ferry across the river, over to Hoboken (in New Jersey) for a few more photos with the Manhattan Skyline in the background.

Caity and John, thank you so much for being such wonderful tour guides and models, I had a fantastic time with you both and can’t wait to catch up in August in Brisbane!!

Cheers

Lisa
